WASHINGTON (AFP) – The US government plans to offer some 900 million dollars to help rebuild the Gaza Strip following Israel's December-January military incursion, the New York Times reported on Tuesday.
The aid will be provided through United Nations and non-governmental organizations, the Times reported, citing unnamed administration officials.
Washington considers Hamas, the Islamist group which has ruled Gaza since June 2007, a terrorist organization, and avoids any direct contact with them.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will formally announce the aid at a meeting next week of Palestinian donors in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, officials told the Times.
Some of the US funds will go to the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank, officials told the newspaper.
Israel's 22-day offensive in Gaza, which targeted Hamas, ended on January 18.
